How the cover crop calculator works

This calculator recommends the best tropical legume cover crop species for your plantation based on six site-specific factors: crop type, soil texture, shade level, annual rainfall, slope gradient, and management goals. It combines these inputs against a scored database of species performance to rank options and calculate seeding rates for your total area.

Methodology

Each cover crop species in the database is scored across multiple agronomic dimensions: establishment speed, shade tolerance, nitrogen fixation capacity, erosion control effectiveness, drought tolerance, waterlogging tolerance, and biomass production. When you enter your site conditions, the calculator weights these scores against your inputs to produce a ranked recommendation.

Seeding rate calculations follow standard plantation establishment protocols. Pure stand rates are adjusted for mixed-species planting when multiple species are selected. The tool accounts for seed size and germination characteristics when converting between kg/ha and total order quantities. Mucuna bracteata is handled separately throughout, because it is nursery-raised and transplanted rather than broadcast.

Reference rates used

Pure-stand broadcast rates: Pueraria javanica 4 to 6 kg/ha, Calopogonium mucunoides 4 to 6 kg/ha, Centrosema pubescens 3 to 4.5 kg/ha, Calopogonium caeruleum 3 to 4.5 kg/ha. Per-species component rates within a mixture: PJ 3 to 7.5, CM 1 to 3, CP 0.5 to 3, CC 0.6 to 1.5 kg/ha. Mucuna bracteata: about 320 nursery-raised seedlings per hectare, roughly 85 to 100 g of seed per hectare, never a kilogram rate.

The best-cited published mixture is MPOB TT No. 501 (Information Series 588, June 2012), Table 1 treatment C2: PJ 4 : CP 3 : CC 1, total 8 kg/ha, with 5 g of Rhizobium (RRI strain) inoculant per kg of seed. Treatment C4, where Mucuna bracteata carries part of the cover, is PJ 3 + CP 1 = 4 kg/ha. These are institutional best-management-practice recommendations from a peat trial rather than primary field measurements; no mineral-soil rate exists, and MPOB does not state whether the totals are per gross hectare or per interrow hectare actually sown. Defensible published mixture totals run 5 to 15 kg/ha and cluster at 6 to 12, and every published mixture is PJ-dominant. Three distinctions matter when reading any output from this tool: the total rate is not the per-species component rate; a gross hectare is not the interrow hectare you actually sow; and grazed-pasture rates of 0.5 to 1.0 kg/ha are not cover crop rates.
