Project types we support
Slope stabilization and highway revegetation
Cover crops reduce soil erosion on cut slopes along highways, railways, and development corridors. PJ and CM are commonly specified for their rapid root establishment on exposed subsoil. These species reduce surface runoff and bind soil within 3-4 months of germination.
Watershed rehabilitation and reforestation
Leguminous cover crops restore nitrogen to depleted soils, preparing degraded land for tree planting programs. They suppress invasive species, reduce erosion during the tree establishment phase, and improve soil organic matter content over 2-3 years.
FELDA and state land development schemes
Cover crops are standard practice in new oil palm and rubber planting schemes. MB is widely preferred for state-managed oil palm developments because of its dense weed suppression, heavy biomass, and shade tolerance, which lets it carry the cover on into the maturing canopy where PJ thins out. MB is nursery-raised and transplanted at about 320 seedlings per hectare, roughly 85 to 100 g of seed per hectare, and is never broadcast.
Mining site rehabilitation
Cover crops rehabilitate ex-mining land by fixing nitrogen into poor substrates and building organic matter. A note on nitrogen figures for tender documentation. This page previously quoted annual nitrogen-fixation ranges per species. We could not trace them to primary sources and have removed them. What is citable: for Pueraria javanica, about 250 kg N/ha/yr accumulated in aboveground biomass at 85-93% Ndfa in one rubber-intercrop trial in northeast Thailand (Clermont-Dauphin et al. 2016, Agriculture, Ecosystems & Environment 217:79-88), which is a measured upper reference point from a single site rather than a design value, and which came with a finding that the cover reduced the drought resilience of the young trees on water-limited ground. For Mucuna bracteata, 67-84% Ndfa by 15N isotope dilution (Cheah, Zaharah & Aminuddin 2010, Oil Palm Bulletin 60) - a proportion, not a quantity. For Centrosema pubescens, PROSEA's 120-270 kg N/ha/yr, an institutional compiled estimate rather than a field measurement. For Calopogonium mucunoides, PROSEA's ~65 kg N/ha accumulated in biomass by a 3-month green manure crop in one experiment, which is not an annual rate. Calopogonium caeruleum has not been separately quantified in any traceable source, so we publish no figure for it. We are happy to supply these citations with a tender submission.
