Cover Crops in India: Chemiseed Supply for Plantations
Chemiseed supplies leguminous cover crop seeds and SoilBoost EA soil conditioner to Indian plantation managers across oil palm, rubber, coffee, and cardamom systems. Cover crops fix nitrogen, hold soil on slopes during the immature phase, suppress weeds, conserve moisture, and build organic matter. The right species depends on the crop, region, and planting stage.
At a glance: India context
- Oil palm expansion: India is expanding oil palm area under the National Mission on Edible Oils Oil Palm (NMEO-OP), with priority states including Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, and the Northeast.
- Rubber: Kerala remains the largest natural rubber producing state, with growing area in Tripura, Assam, and other Northeast states.
- Coffee: Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu host the bulk of Indian coffee area (Coorg, Chikmagalur, Wayanad, Nilgiris), often under shade with active cover-crop interest.
- Common challenges: sloping terrain in the Western Ghats and Northeast, monsoon-driven erosion, and the need for fast early cover at replanting or new oil palm planting.
Cover crop species relevant to India
Pueraria javanica (PJ): vigorous core legume
PJ (tropical kudzu) is a vigorous core legume widely used in Asian rubber and oil palm and well suited to Indian plantations across Kerala, the Northeast, and the new NMEO-OP oil palm states. Seeding rate: 4 to 6 kg/ha. PJ typically contributes on the order of 40 to 70 kg N per hectare in plantation systems, depending on age and establishment.
Mucuna bracteata (MB): nursery-raised, long-lived cover
MB produces dense, persistent ground cover well suited to oil palm and mature rubber. It is nursery-raised and transplanted at about 320 seedlings per hectare (roughly 85 to 100 g of seed per hectare). It is not broadcast like the other species.
Calopogonium mucunoides (CM): fast pioneer
CM establishes quickly and gives rapid early ground cover, making it a useful pioneer in the first months after planting or replanting. Seeding rate: 4 to 6 kg/ha as a mono stand.
Centrosema pubescens (CP) and Calopogonium caeruleum (CC): shade tolerant for canopy closure
As the rubber or oil palm canopy closes and light at ground level drops, shade-tolerant legumes carry the cover forward. CP seeding rate: 3 to 4.5 kg/ha. CC seeding rate: 3 to 4.5 kg/ha. These species are often combined with pioneers in a mixed cover strategy.
SoilBoost EA for acidic and leaching-prone soils
SoilBoost EA is a Leonardite-derived humic acid soil conditioner manufactured exclusively by Chemiseed Sdn. Bhd. in Malaysia. It is 60.6% humic acid by the CDFA method, pH 3.84, with 0.45% sulfur. On the acidic soils common in Kerala rubber, Northeast tea and rubber, and Western Ghats coffee belts, a humic acid conditioner supports soil condition and structure. SoilBoost EA is applied by broadcast at 50 to 100 kg/ha or by drench at 10 to 15 kg/ha. It is a soil conditioner: it is not a fertiliser substitute and not a disease treatment.

Trust and seed quality
Chemiseed cover crop seed lots are tested to ISTA and AOSA methods for germination and purity, with BPI and ISPM-7 phytosanitary documentation available for export shipments to India. Spec sheets and certificates of analysis are available on request via the document center.

Pertanyaan yang Sering Diajukan
Which cover crops support NMEO-OP oil palm expansion?
A mixed cover is common in new oil palm: a fast pioneer such as Calopogonium mucunoides (4 to 6 kg/ha) for early cover, with Pueraria javanica or Mucuna bracteata as the long-lived legume, and shade-tolerant Centrosema pubescens or Calopogonium caeruleum once the canopy closes.
What works for Kerala rubber?
Pueraria javanica and Mucuna bracteata are the most established legume covers in rubber. PJ is broadcast at 4 to 6 kg/ha. MB is nursery-raised and transplanted at about 320 seedlings per hectare.
What does SoilBoost EA do?
SoilBoost EA is a humic acid soil conditioner that supports soil condition and structure on acidic, leaching-prone soils. It is applied at 50 to 100 kg/ha by broadcast or 10 to 15 kg/ha by drench. It is not a fertiliser substitute.
