Maximise SoilBoost EA: practical application tips for plantation managers

What SoilBoost EA is, and why application method matters

SoilBoost EA is a leonardite humic soil conditioner, manufactured exclusively for Chemiseed Sdn. Bhd. and Kudzu Seeds Trading. It is not a fertiliser and it is not a biofertiliser: it contains no added microorganisms. Its role is to supply humic substances to the root zone, where they can help the soil hold nutrients and water and support soil structure alongside your normal fertiliser programme.

Because SoilBoost EA works in the soil rather than on the leaf, placement and soil moisture matter more than the hour of application. This guide covers the practical details that help it reach the root zone where it is needed. Published responses to humic products vary widely between soils and crops (Rose et al., 2014), so measure the effect on your own blocks.

General application principles

Place it where the roots are. Apply to the palm circle, tree base or planting row, where feeder roots are concentrated, rather than across bare interrows.

Apply to moist soil. SoilBoost EA is supplied dry and can be broadcast and lightly incorporated, or dissolved in water and applied as a root-zone drench. Applying when the soil is moist, or watering in afterwards, helps it move into the root zone. On slopes, avoid applying just before heavy rain, which can wash product off the surface.

Check compatibility before mixing. Apply SoilBoost EA separately from pesticides and other products unless your agronomist has confirmed that a tank mix or blend is compatible.

Store properly. Keep bags sealed, dry and out of direct sunlight, and follow the storage guidance on the label.

Application protocol: cover crop establishment

At cover crop establishment, SoilBoost EA is used to support the soil the seedlings are rooting into; it does not replace good seedbed preparation, the right sowing rate, or inoculation with the correct rhizobia.

At planting

Apply SoilBoost EA to the prepared seedbed immediately before or during sowing and incorporate it into the top few centimetres of soil, where germination and early root growth take place. In row or pocket planting, place it in the planting furrow or hole before the seed.

Follow-up applications

Any follow-up application is best placed around established plants or along the rows once the seedlings have developed their first root systems. The number and timing of follow-ups depend on soil, rainfall and the species sown; agree them with your agronomist. Slow-starting species such as Mucuna bracteata need weed control and patience in the first months, whatever soil conditioner is used.

Application protocol: mature plantations

In established plantations, SoilBoost EA is used as part of a long-term soil programme alongside fertiliser, organic inputs and, where soil tests call for it, lime.

Wet season application

Apply at the start of the main wet season in your area, when soil moisture helps the material move into the root zone. Focus the application on the palm circle or tree base, where feeder roots are concentrated.

Timing with fertiliser

SoilBoost EA can be applied in the same round as fertiliser or separately; your agronomist can advise whether combining rounds suits your soils and logistics. It is a soil conditioner, so it does not replace any part of the fertiliser programme.

Application protocol: replanting

Replanting is a natural point to rebuild soil condition. Apply SoilBoost EA to the planting hole or planting row before setting new palms or trees, with follow-up applications during establishment as agreed with your agronomist.

Combine SoilBoost EA with cover crop establishment and organic inputs during replanting, so that the soil programme supports both the cover crop and the young palms.

Measuring results

Humic products act on the soil, so look at soil indicators as well as yield. Useful things to monitor include soil aggregation (soil crumbles rather than forming hard clods), water infiltration during rainfall, earthworm activity and the decomposition of surface residues, together with soil and leaf analysis.

The most reliable way to judge value on your estate is a simple comparison: leave an untreated strip or block under the same management and compare soil indicators, leaf nutrient levels and yield records over successive seasons.
