Cover Crops in Cambodia | Chemiseed Supply for Rubber and Cassava
Chemiseed supplies leguminous cover crop seeds and SoilBoost EA soil conditioner to Cambodian plantation managers, rubber concessions, and cassava operations. Cover crops fix nitrogen, hold soil on slopes during the immature phase of rubber, suppress weeds, conserve moisture, and build organic matter.
At a glance: Cambodia context
- Rubber: Cambodia's rubber sector has expanded in the eastern provinces, with concessions and smallholdings concentrated in Kampong Cham, Ratanakiri, Kratie, Mondulkiri, and Tboung Khmum.
- Cassava: Cassava is a major export crop and rotation cover, particularly in Battambang, Pailin, and northwestern provinces.
- Cashew: Cashew plantings have grown in Kampong Thom and Kampong Cham, where ground cover during the immature phase reduces weed pressure.
- Common challenges: seasonal monsoon rainfall, erosion on cleared concession blocks, and the need for fast early cover at replanting.
Cover crop species relevant to Cambodia
Pueraria javanica (PJ): vigorous core legume
PJ (tropical kudzu) is well established in Southeast Asian rubber systems and is suited to Cambodia's wet-season climate. Seeding rate: 4 to 6 kg/ha. PJ typically contributes on the order of 40 to 70 kg N per hectare in plantation systems, depending on age and establishment.
Centrosema pubescens (CP): shade tolerant for canopy closure
CP is shade tolerant and carries the cover forward as the rubber canopy closes. Seeding rate: 3 to 4.5 kg/ha. It is often combined with pioneer species in a mixed cover strategy for rubber concessions.
Calopogonium mucunoides (CM): fast pioneer
CM establishes quickly in the first months after planting and is widely used as a pioneer in Southeast Asian rubber. Seeding rate: 4 to 6 kg/ha as a mono stand.
Mucuna bracteata (MB): nursery-raised, long-lived cover
MB produces dense, persistent ground cover suitable for rubber blocks. It is nursery-raised and transplanted at about 320 seedlings per hectare (roughly 85 to 100 g of seed per hectare). It is not broadcast like the other species.
SoilBoost EA on rubber and cassava soils
SoilBoost EA is a Leonardite-derived humic acid soil conditioner manufactured exclusively by Chemiseed Sdn. Bhd. in Malaysia. It is 60.6% humic acid by the CDFA method, pH 3.84, with 0.45% sulfur. On acidic, leached soils common in Cambodian rubber and cassava areas, a humic acid conditioner supports soil condition and structure. SoilBoost EA is applied by broadcast at 50 to 100 kg/ha or by drench at 10 to 15 kg/ha. It is a soil conditioner: it is not a fertiliser substitute and not a disease treatment.

Frequently asked questions
Which cover crop is best for Cambodian rubber concessions?
Pueraria javanica is the core legume for Cambodian rubber, broadcast at 4 to 6 kg/ha. Centrosema pubescens is added for shade tolerance as the canopy closes. Calopogonium mucunoides is used as a pioneer at establishment.
Can cover crops be used between cassava rotations?
Pueraria javanica and Centrosema pubescens are used for biomass and nitrogen contribution during cassava fallow phases on suitable soils. Species fit depends on the rotation plan and shipment volume, and we will discuss this in the quote conversation.
What does SoilBoost EA do?
SoilBoost EA is a humic acid soil conditioner that supports soil condition and structure on acidic, leached soils. It is applied at 50 to 100 kg/ha by broadcast or 10 to 15 kg/ha by drench. It is not a fertiliser substitute.
