Cover Crops and Soil Conditioners for MENA
This page is for buyers in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) who are looking at a humic acid soil conditioner or legume cover crop seed. Most MENA farming is irrigated cereals, dates, vegetables, forage and protected cultivation, so SoilBoost EA is usually the relevant product, and tropical legume covers fit only where warm conditions and irrigation can support them. Chemiseed Sdn. Bhd. supplies buyers worldwide on request, from Malaysia.
Quotation by country: United Arab Emirates | Saudi Arabia | Oman | Qatar | Kuwait | Bahrain | Egypt | Morocco
At a glance: MENA context
- Egypt: Nile Delta and reclaimed desert agriculture (vegetables, fruit, cotton, forage).
- Morocco: olive, citrus and stone fruit on Mediterranean soils.
- United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Oman: date palm, forage, open-field vegetables and controlled-environment production.
- Common challenges: sandy, saline and low organic matter soils, high evaporation and the need for inputs that support soil structure and water holding.
Climate fit: where tropical legume covers do not belong
Pueraria javanica, Calopogonium, Centrosema and Mucuna bracteata are cover crops of the humid tropics. They are not suited to rain-fed ground on arid and semi-arid farms, and under irrigation a cover competes with the crop for water. In a four-year trial under young rubber in northeast Thailand, a Pueraria cover reduced the trees' ability to survive intense drought at the top of the slope (Clermont-Dauphin et al. 2016). On water-limited land a cover crop has to be planned around the water budget, and for most MENA buyers it is not the right input. Where warm-season conditions and irrigation can support a legume, we discuss species fit case by case.
SoilBoost EA on sandy and low organic matter soils
SoilBoost EA is a leonardite-derived humic acid soil conditioner manufactured exclusively for Chemiseed Sdn. Bhd. and Kudzu Seeds Trading. Typical analysis: pH 3.84 and 0.45% sulfur as sent (25.81% sample moisture), equivalent to 0.61% on a dry-weight basis. A certificate of analysis for the batch supplied is available on request. It may support soil structure and root-zone conditions on sandy, low organic matter soils as part of a normal fertiliser and irrigation programme. It is a soil conditioner, not a fertiliser, and the application rate for your crop, soil and irrigation method is set on the quotation. Product page: SoilBoost EA 25 kg.
Import requirements in the main Gulf markets
These are the rules we have checked on official sources. They change, and they can differ by product, species and country of origin, so the importer confirms them with the authority before ordering. The importer holds any registration or permit in the destination country.
| Country | Seed for sowing | Fertilisers and soil conditioners (for SoilBoost EA) |
|---|---|---|
| United Arab Emirates | The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) is the plant protection authority. A phytosanitary certificate is required; whether an import permit is also needed depends on the species (MICOR, United Arab Emirates). | Federal Law No. 39 of 1992 on fertilisers and agricultural conditioners, as amended: importing or circulating a fertiliser or agricultural conditioner needs prior approval from the competent authority; the amended law refers to the Emirates Drug Establishment. |
| Saudi Arabia | The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture (MEWA) is the plant protection authority. A phytosanitary certificate is required, with species-specific conditions; for legume seed, for example, a laboratory certificate showing freedom from dodder (MICOR, Saudi Arabia). | Fertilisers and soil improvers may be imported, traded and distributed only after registration and a licence from the ministry responsible for agriculture (Royal Decree M/4 of 1423 H; FAOLEX). |
| Oman | The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries Wealth and Water Resources. An import permit and a phytosanitary certificate are listed as required for seed for sowing (MICOR, Oman). | Registration with the same ministry. The documents include a registration certificate from the country of origin, attested by an Omani or GCC embassy, and a certificate of analysis from a government or GLP laboratory (gov.om). |
| Qatar | Qatar applies the GCC regulation on seeds, seed tubers and seedlings (Law No. 25 of 2010). Confirm the import procedure with the national plant protection authority. | Not checked: confirm with the national authority before ordering. |
| Kuwait and Bahrain | Not checked: confirm with the national plant protection authority before ordering. | Not checked: confirm with the national authority before ordering. |

Frequently asked questions
Are tropical legume cover crops relevant in MENA?
Only in a few situations. For most MENA agriculture (irrigated cereals, dates, vegetables and orchards), tropical legume covers are not the standard system, and on water-limited land a cover competes with the crop for water. Where warm-season conditions and irrigation can support a legume, we discuss species fit case by case.
Where does SoilBoost EA fit in MENA agriculture?
On sandy, low organic matter and saline soils in date palm, vegetable and reclaimed-desert farming, as part of a normal fertiliser and irrigation programme. It is a soil conditioner, not a fertiliser.
What does the importer need for SoilBoost EA in the UAE, Saudi Arabia or Oman?
In the UAE, prior approval from the competent authority under Federal Law No. 39 of 1992; in Saudi Arabia, registration and a licence from the ministry responsible for agriculture; in Oman, registration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries Wealth and Water Resources, with an attested certificate of registration from the country of origin and a laboratory certificate of analysis. The importer holds the registration; we supply the batch certificate of analysis on request.
