植物特征
Perennial, creeping, aggressive climber supplied by Chemiseed Sdn. Bhd. (Malaysia). Thick stems and pseudo tap roots extending 2–3m deep. Branches from each node. Adventitious roots do not form easily from nodes touching the ground.
USES
Nitrogen fixation, weed suppression, erosion control, soil moisture and temperature regulation, and soil organic matter improvement. Research conducted by the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) confirms that Mucuna bracteata derives 67–84% of its nitrogen directly from the atmosphere, delivering 150–200 kg of fixed nitrogen per hectare per year under Southeast Asian plantation conditions, a proven reduction in synthetic fertiliser dependency. For a detailed species-by-species comparison, see PJ vs MB Comparison.
GROWTH HABIT
Shade tolerant during establishment. Initial growth is slow during the first 8–10 months before becoming highly prolific. Achieves 100% ground cover within 6 months under adequate rainfall, confirmed as the fastest canopy closure of any cover crop tested in Malaysian plantation trials.
WEED CONTROL
The dense legume mat suppresses weed density and dry weight by 94.7–99.9% versus unweeded control plots in oil palm inter-rows, effectively eliminating Imperata cylindrica (lalang/cogon grass) and broadleaf competitors, reducing or eliminating herbicide passes. What is Mucuna bracteata (MB) and who is it for?
Mucuna bracteata is a vigorous climbing and creeping perennial legume used as a cover crop in oil palm and rubber plantations across Southeast Asia. It fixes 67 to 84 percent of its nitrogen from the atmosphere (MPOB OPB 60), suppresses weeds through dense biomass, and survives extended dry spells of up to four months before regrowing within roughly 30 days after cutting. MB is best suited for young oil palm, peat-soil BMP programs, sloped terrain, and weed-heavy planting sites. It requires active palm-circle management and is not a maintenance-free or set-and-forget solution.
Quick facts: Mucuna bracteata (MB)
| Scientific name | Mucuna bracteata |
|---|---|
| Growth habit | Vigorous climbing/creeping perennial legume |
| Seeding rate | Seedlings ~320/ha (oil palm peat, MPOB TT-501) or direct seed 4-6 kg/ha |
| Soil pH range | 4.5 - 6.5 |
| 耐阴性 | Low to moderate (prefers open to partial sun) |
| 耐旱性 | High (survives ~4 months dry) |
| N fixation | 67-84% atmospheric-derived N (MPOB OPB 60) |
| Establishment speed | Moderate (6-8 weeks for seedlings to establish) |
Where does Mucuna bracteata (MB) work best?
Best for
- Young oil palm plantations
- Oil palm peat BMP programs (MPOB TT-501)
- Sloped terrain requiring erosion control
- Weed-heavy planting sites
- Coconut systems (with management)
Not ideal for
- Deep shade environments
- Unmanaged young oil palm (can smother palms without circle maintenance)
- Mature shaded rubber plantations
What Mucuna bracteata (MB) will not do
Requires active palm-circle management throughout establishment and maintenance periods. MB is not a maintenance-free cover crop. It is not a standalone disease control measure for any crop. The single-site Nigerian yield-doubling claim sometimes cited in marketing materials is not Tier-A evidence and should not be treated as a guaranteed outcome across all conditions.
How to establish and use Mucuna bracteata (MB)
For oil palm peat systems, follow MPOB TT-501 guidance: establish via seedlings at approximately 320 per hectare. For direct seeding on mineral soils, use 4 to 6 kg/ha. Seedlings typically need 6 to 8 weeks to establish. Maintain clear palm circles throughout the establishment period to prevent smothering of young palms. On sloped terrain, MB provides effective erosion control once established.
What does the research say about Mucuna bracteata (MB)?
- MPOB OPB 60 documents nitrogen fixation rates of 67-84% atmospheric-derived N.
- MPOB TT-501 provides the peat BMP establishment protocol (~320 seedlings/ha).
- Wawan 2019 demonstrates MB performance on slopes for erosion control.
- Pertanika 2021 reports drought survival of approximately 4 months with regrowth ~30 days after cutting.
Frequently asked questions about Mucuna bracteata (MB)
Why does Mucuna bracteata need active management?
MB is a vigorous climber that can overgrow palm circles if left unmanaged. Regular palm-circle clearing is essential to prevent competition with young palms. It is not a set-and-forget cover crop.
Can Mucuna bracteata smother young oil palms?
Yes. Without active palm-circle management, MB can climb and smother young oil palms. This is why MPOB protocols emphasize regular clearing around palm bases during establishment.
What is the MPOB peat BMP seeding rate for Mucuna bracteata?
MPOB TT-501 recommends approximately 320 seedlings per hectare for oil palm peat systems. For direct seeding on mineral soils, rates of 4 to 6 kg/ha are standard.
How long can Mucuna bracteata survive drought?
Research published in Pertanika (2021) shows MB can survive approximately 4 months of drought and regrow within about 30 days after cutting, making it one of the more drought-resilient legume cover crops.
Does Mucuna bracteata increase FFB yield?
Some studies report FFB yield improvements when MB is used as cover crop. However, the single-site Nigerian claim of yield doubling is not Tier-A evidence. Yield outcomes depend on site conditions, management quality, and other agronomic factors. The primary evidence-backed benefits are nitrogen fixation, weed suppression, and soil improvement.
